Workshops and Training Topics
The Desert Rainbow
Center provides group workshops and training
sessions on topics related to HIV/AIDS, human
sexuality, personal responsibility, risk
reduction, and behavior modification or staff
can tailor a presentation or workshop to meet
your group’s specific needs. All presentations
are available in English and Spanish and are
geared to address the ages, genders, and needs
of the targeted audience. Call the Desert
Rainbow Center at 543-3062 for more information
or to schedule a presentation for your group.
Abstinence – This
workshop is designed to stimulate recognition of
the risks of early sexual activity by preteens
and adolescents. Activities focus on positive
decision-making, peer pressure resistance and
the benefits of abstinence and self-esteem. The
“Empathy BellyTM” pregnancy simulator
can be included to illustrate the realities of
pregnancy.
Behavior Modification
-- This interactive session facilitates a better
understanding of the different stages and
emotions a person experiences when attempting to
integrate new health behaviors into their
lifestyle. The Stages of Change model is used
to help audience members gauge positive changes
in their own lives. Participants and
facilitators also engage in discussions
regarding the adoption of healthier measures
that reduce HIV risk behaviors.
Communication –
Communication among parents, children and
partners is an essential component of
responsible human sexuality education. This
session addresses the communication skills
necessary to openly discuss sensitive issues.
Videos and interactive activities enhance
learning.
Contraception – This
workshop provides comprehensive information and
discussion on the history of birth control
methods, statistical effectiveness, risks, and
usage. The presentation covers basic anatomy,
the reproductive cycle, and birth control in
the context of reducing unintended pregnancies.
Furthermore, male involvement in family planning
is emphasied. Visual
aids include female and male anatomy posters and
samples of all methods. Moreover, male
involvement in family planning is emphasized.
HIV/AIDS – This
informative presentation incorporates a thorough
explanation about the differences between HIV
and AIDS, modes of transmission of the disease,
and risk identification and reduction. HIV
counseling and testing is discussed including
testing methods, confidential versus anonymous
testing, and locations where testing services
are available in our community. A guest speaker
can also be incorporated into the presentation
to initiate dialogue about the realities of
living with HIV/AIDS.
Human
Sexuality –
Participants are introduced to the many facets
of human sexuality including: sensuality,
intimacy, gender roles, basic reproduction,
sexual orientation, and social influences. This
presentation centers on having a healthy view of
sexuality and the need for open communication
with partners and children. Visual aids can
include anatomy posters, handouts and a video.
Activities on values and decision-making can be
incorporated.
Sexual
Identity and Intimacy
– This presentation utilizes different
theoretical models and continuums on biology,
gender and sexual orientation to discuss what it
means to connect to an individual and/or larger
group. Participants will learn ways of
fostering sensitivity and self-awareness to
understand others, and ultimately, build a
healthy and open communication with them.
Risk
Reduction -- This
workshop offers in-depth exploration of the
techniques used to reduce the transmission of
HIV and other STDs. An emphasis is placed on a
variety of techniques including abstinence,
safer sex and safe needle use. This
presentation helps to dispel myths regarding
relationships, gender roles, and sexual
orientation in a fun interactive atmosphere.
Self-Esteem and Self-Efficacy (Self-Worth)
– This educational lecture incorporates age
appropriate information on sexuality, body pride
and privacy. Discussion concerning social
influences and peer pressure helps participants
to understand how having positive self-esteem is
beneficial. Activities include defining personal
values, developing assertiveness skills, and
learning to say, “I like myself.” A component
can be added that helps parents develop the
skills needed to build their children’s
self-esteem.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
– the types, risks, physiological and
psychological impacts, and prevention of STDs
are addressed. Visual aids include a PowerPoint
presentation, a demonstration on the correct use
of condoms plus an activity demonstrating
transmission. An emphasis is placed on
abstinence and risk reduction techniques.
Women’s and Men’s Health
– This presentation encompasses gender
appropriate information to help women and men
maintain good reproductive health. The
instruments used to perform a gynecological exam
are presented. Using teaching models,
participants learn the proper technique to
conduct a breast self-examination or testicular
self-examination. Topics discussed include the
reproductive health exam, the Pap smear, breast
health, testicular and prostate health, HIV/STD
prevention, safer sex, contraception, early
cancer detection, proper nutrition and other
related topics. Pamphlets and information about
local resources are distributed. |
